Illustrator Logo Design
Designing a logo for a fictional baking company.
Baking is a side hobby and a passion of mine, so within the parameters of an “arts” theme, I created “grumble & crumble”, my own bakery! We were asked to brainstorm keywords that would influence our logo designs. The words I came up with were creative, sweet, elegant, hungry, and delicate. Some market competitors’ logos I looked into were Poppycake Baking Company and Honolulu Cookie Company. Both logos gave off a dainty yet sweet aura that I used as my inspiration.
Initial Sketches
My initial sketches incorporated an illustration of a dessert so that the viewer would not only see “grumble & crumble” and know it’s a bakery but also become hungry after seeing the logo. After feedback from my peers and deciding a favorite, I proceeded with several sketches.

I wanted to choose a type and that reflected a bakery in its delightful and light quality. The type I chose was: Boucherie Sans. After creating an illustration that would be memorable, I am now left with 3 rough draft sketches ready for critique!
Final Iterations
My peers felt that this cookie design was the most memorable and whimsical. They also appreciated the use of negative space to create the face for the cookie. I was finally tasked with designing a series of my logo in a negative, along with some more colorful explorations.
Final Thoughts
My favorite part about this project is that I know I’ve created a good company name and logo when my friends remember it to this day. When I bake for the people around me, they remember my fictional company and say that I should start a bakery called “Grumble & Crumble”, and that is the most rewarding part of this project.
During a trip to sunny Arizona, I was disappointed to stumble across a bakery chain that recently opened in the area. I personally have never seen or heard of this chain before, but I oddly found some comfort in knowing that our logos have some similarities. They may have this logo now but crumbl cookies might have some competition in the future!
